O Magazine Tells Fur to F-Off

In a brave and bold move, Susan Casey, Editor in Chief of O Magazine, Oprah’s top-selling periodical, lets the world know that everyone at O loves fashion and loves the look of fur, but only on its original owners:

…at O we strive to be stylish – and know our readers do, too – we encourage every woman to create her own definition of what that means… but all trends will never work for all people. And there’s one that O has decided to skip, not just this season but in every issue since the magazine began: garments made of real fur…

“In the beginning my thing was, ‘Have you seen Chicago winters? You need a fur coat in Chicago!” Oprah told me. “But I had an aha moment looking at a sable cape in my closet.” The cape’s  thick pelt gave her a visceral sense of how many four-leggeds had been used in its creation, bred specifically to be killed: “and that was it. I gave away all my furs 20 years ago.” That’s not to say you won’t find exotic animal skins and feathers in O’s October issue; it’s just that they’re still attached to the living creates that grew them…  Adam and his team are also enthusiastic about the newest faux furs, which no longer resemble muppety bath mats of yore.

Bravo Susan Casey & Oprah! I have always admired you for speaking the truth, no matter who it pisses off! Thank you for speaking out for the voiceless!

This article will do more to change the face of fur in fashion then you can imagine!  Women idolize Oprah.  Thank you!!!  West Hollywood is poised to pass the first ban on fur in the nation tomorrow night and you are urging your readers to leave fur on its original owners.  This is a good day for the animals for sure….

Kudos to O magazine, Oprah and Susan Casey! Hopefully millions of women will follow their lead and say no to the cruelty of fur. There’s nothing chic or glamorous about a garment made from a tortured animal. I only wish Vogue editor Anna Wintour understood that. Someone close to her reports that she made it her primary mission to bolster fur sales simply to anger protestors, whom she despises. One who supports and bolsters the abuse of animals as a form of payback to animal lovers who protest fur is nothing short of sociopathic. Thank God for those in the media, including Project Runway’s Tim Gunn, who consistently speak out against fur and whose sense of compassion and humanity will hopefully counter Anna Wintour’s lack of it. I don’t buy Vogue anymore because of it and while my singular boycott of the magazine isn’t likely to matter to Miss Cruella-de-Vogue, hopefully others will begin to see the light and fur will no longer be regarded as glam, but as it truly is: grotesque.

I enjoyed your post. Anna Wintour is a very, very disturbed human being.

Jai Ma! to all humanity contributing to take a crucial stand against the bottom line of cruelty – Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu!

BravO! Thank you O magazine, Susan Casey and the wonderful Oprah for taking a strong, public and compassionate stand against this horrific cruelty and suffering. How can anything that comes from such violence and suffering be seen as a beautiful item?! Fur doesn’t prove you’re rich or sexy, just cruel and selfish.
Please keep speaking out against animal cruelty; it too matters!

BRAVO! Wearing fur is all about Vanity. Compassion, kindness and love is what I would rather wear. Not Cruelty, torture and murder! What the animals go through is horrific. Skinned ALIVE and anally electrocuted, because it’s “easier” to get the fur off of a warm body. SICK. We must be the change we want in the world! I hope every one follows Oprah’s example!

Now, if only we can get her to ‘go there’ with leather…

  • Ann

Thank you, Ms. Casey!  How refreshing to see mainstream media refusing to continue the horrors
    against our furry friends.

West Hollywood DID get the ban on fur sales ! Hurray ! With Oprah on the animals side, I’m hoping many women will start to see Fur for what it truly is… The skin n fur of a once living breathing animal, who’s life was created (fur farms) & taken to soon – or who was trapped & suffered equally.
It just amazes me women can walk around with dead animal skin & think they look good :( They look uneducated, cold & selfish. THANK YOU !!!!
